750 KM TO HIKE THROUGHOUT THE REGION
Rota Vicentina’s network of routes has gradually evolved, spreading today throughout this magnificent region of the Alentejo and Vicentine coast. While the coastal trails are truly breathtaking, so are the many paths that extend through fields and mountain ranges further into the interior, areas that have been overlooked by tourism for a long time but that nonetheless deserve to be appreciated by hikers.
The Historical Way the Fishermen’s Trail and the Circular Routes, offer an increasingly complete network of trails, with greater variety and flexibility, to be adjusted to the needs and expectations of all different types of hikers.
The experienced hiker who goes from north to south without hesitation, the family that adjusts to the rhythm of the children, the curious hikers and those who might just be finding their feet will find many different possibilities for combining these trails to create the routes that best suit them.
Welcome to some of the best hiking trails in the world, and have a great hike!
Awarded the European certificate “Leading Quality Trails – Best of Europe” for its high quality as a pedestrian trail, it covers the main settlements and villages through a rural itinerary spanning several centuries of history. Mainly consisting of dirt roads, it is a classic Grand Route (GR).
Mostly by the sea, the Fishermen’s Trail travels along the trails used by the locals to access the beaches and fishing grounds. It is a single track walkable only on foot, along the cliffs, with lots of sand and therefore more demanding from the physical point of view. A challenge to permanent contact with the wind of the sea, the rudeness of the coastal landscape and the presence of a wild and persistent nature.
To extend your stay or to simply spend a few hours on the trails with no demand of commitment or extensive preparation, to do one by one or to combine together with the Grande Rota, we created a system of Circular Routes that includes the best of the region, suitable for all tastes. These are short routes, with their beginnings circling back to their end points. These routes are an even easier way to discover the pleasure of hiking the SW of Portugal as they are short half a day or less hikes, without transfers or complications.
