Ordered to be built by Dom Pedro II, in the 17th century, to defend the coast from pirates and corsairs. It is located on the cliff in front of Ilha do Pessegueiro, Porto Covo. The existence of a garrison is known until at least 1844. It was used together with the fort erected inside the island, ruined by the earthquake of 1755. It has been a Monument of Public Interest since 1957 (decree n.º 41191 of 18 July).
