Reading Club of Lagos: Around the World in 11 books, with Sandro William Junqueira
ANNUAL THEME: THE WORLD SO FULL OF WORLDS
The world is vast. The books, infinite. By reading authors from different geographies we can increase the boundaries of our human and literary territory. Travel without leaving the same place. Open windows in the head for a better understanding of us, of the other, and of this global place we inhabit.
Book in analysis/reading: MENDIGOS e ALTIVOS, by Albert Cossery
Novel of 1955, it is considered the masterpiece of Albert Cossery, and was the subject of three adaptations: two to the cinema and one to the comics. A beggar by his own decision, Gohar, a former university professor of Literature and Philosophy, leads us, through the streets of Cairo and the snares of morality, to a crude and detached knowledge of the fare with which modern society muffles, at birth, the vital possibilities of human beings. A vision of the civilized world as an organic uselessness, in an explosive cocktail of derision and reflection.
