A Coast of Many Colours

Par Inntravel

• Inn to inn self-guided walking with luggage transported
• Unique blend of accommodation, traditional and modern
• Fabulous variety of scenery, leisurely walking
• Coast to coast walking, breathtaking beaches
• Real ‘sense of journey’ and achievement

This is a walk from hotel to hotel, at your own pace, staying in a unique blend of traditional and modern accommodation along the way, that takes you from the Algarve’s honeyed, southern coast through its agricultural heartland and onwards to the wilder, western shores on a great combination of Historical Way, Fishermen’s Trail and also Via Algarviana.

A world away from the region’s busy resorts, the unspoiled landscapes within the Sw Alentejo and Vicentina Coast Natural Park are characterised by dramatic cliffs, pristine coves and quiet, rolling pastures.

The colours are many and varied: long stretches of golden sand give way to grey-and-red jagged rocks before softening to a paler orange and rose as the coastal edge turns northwards.

Description

Arrival: You begin with two nights at the Casa Praia Mar in the coastal village of Salema, edged by low limestone cliffs. Take time to explore the rows of traditional fishermen’s cottages that make up this quiet fishing village.

Day 1: Salema » Burgau | 14 km, 4.5 h
Your first day's walk takes you east along the dramatic coastline, with plenty of options for swimming. Explore the ruined 17th-century fort of Almádena, before reaching the small town of Burgau. A loop brings you back to the coast at the Boca do Rio (literally 'mouth of the river') from where you return to Salema.

Day 2: Salema » Vila do Bispo |19 km, 6.5 h
Leaving Salema to the west, you pass more beaches and bays before reaching the dramatic viewpoint at Praia da Barranco. Behind the beach, you follow a long valley (or barranco inland to join the long-distance footpath, the Via Algarviana, which you follow to the town of Vila do Bispo, where you stay at the Hotel Mira Sagres.
Accommodation: Hotel Mira Sagres

Day 3: Vila do Bispo » Pedralva |15 km, 5 h
Your journey continues into the pastoral heartland of Algarve, through scattered farmsteads and valleys cut by streams descending from higher pastures of scrub and heathland. Your destination is Pedralva, a once-thriving farming community that is now the lovingly restored hamlet of Casas da Pedralva. You spend the night in a charming cottage in the heart of the ‘village’.
Accommodation: Aldeia da Pedralva

Day 4: Pedralva » Carrapateira | 12.5 km, 4h
Today, you follow the fertile valley before ascending over wooded hills from where you can soon see the sea, then slowly descend to the surfing beach of Praia do Amado. There are beach cafes here for refreshments before you follow a short section of the Rota Vicentina to the small fisherman's quay at Praia do Amado. Crossing the dunes you reach Carrapateira and Casa Fajara, where you spend your last three nights.
Accommodation: Casa Fajara

Days 5-6: Around Carrapateira | 15km, 5hrs and 11,5Km, 3,5hrs
We suggest two walks for your time in Carrapateira. The first heads north, exploring the lagoon and tranquil wetlands around Bordeira, (15km, 5hrs); while the second rounds the Carrapateira promontory, again offering scintillating views of this rugged, fragile and colourful coastline, carpeted in flowers in spring. (11.5km, 3.5hrs)

On your return to Casa Fajara, enjoy a last evening meal, as you reflect on a part of Algarve that few others see.
