Núcleo de Santa Clara-A-Velha

33

Sabóia and Reservoir

31.5 KM

This difficult level course can be considered a longer and harder version of the blue course number 32 to which it joins at 15 km.It is the only route that goes straight west, crossing the N266 and immediately entering a strong climb that culminates near the ruin of a mill, where you have the best view of the village. Other steep climbs will follow along the route with the one at 22 km being the most difficult. At the end of this last ascent with the impressive panoramas of the reservoir dam, there follows a succession of climbs and descents, at times a little technical, extending over 2 km.The final part is almost always descending in the midst of dense and refreshing vegetation, which ends with the last climb which leads us to a natural and panoramic viewpoint over the village of Santa Clara-a-Velha.The route passes Totenique, Sabóia, the train station at Santa-Clara and at the side of the iconic D. Maria Bridge.

This route is easily accessible from Santa Clara – Sabóia train station.

At 24 km you can make a detour of about 1 km each way to go down to the reservoir dam where there is, in summer, a small river beach. Please note that you go up 25 m first before going down 70 m. The route has the aggravation of including a very hard climb reaching 30% inclination.

Warnings

The route crosses and at points crosses the national road N266 and some municipal roads that may have some traffic. Caution is recommended.

Small sections of the route coincide with two Circular Routes and the Historical Route (GR11) of the Rota Vicentina so it is very likely that you will encounter walkers.

There may be a need to open cattle protection gates. Always close them after passing
