Núcleo de Odemira

East Mira

38 KM

This is one of those misleading trails … The first half is relatively easy and almost flat, but the second is demanding and justifies its color. The greatest difficulties of this route include the long climb halfway along where it leaves the company of the Mira River and which, although intersected by small descents, extends for 8 km. There is also another section, very near the end, at 34 km, just outside the village of Bemposta, where the last climb ends almost in single track. The route starts by crossing a small part of the town of Odemira, passes a short section on a very interesting single track, and then goes hand in hand with the Mira River along its right bank. Enjoy being dazzled by the magnificent view. The trail then continues with the Serra de Monchique in the background, advancing along rural and forest paths that often open to natural viewpoints over the nearby mountain ranges.

Warnings

The route crosses part of the town of Odemira and in Bemposta to the N263 and at these points you can encounter some car traffic. Caution is recommended.
Part of the route coincides with the Rota Vicentina walking paths – namely the Historical Way (GR11) – so it is very likely that you will meet with hikers.
It might be necessary to open livestock protection gates which should always be closed again after passing through.
At 1.5 km the course comes down to a small single track where there is a very narrow section along the edge of a small water channel. Consider walking with your bike here.
The final part of the last descent is on calçada, which can sometimes be very slippery.
The route does not cross any fords or waterways.
