Rota Vicentina Association

ABOUT THE ASSOCIATION

Rota Vicentina – Association for the Promotion of Nature Tourism on the Alentejo and Vicentine Coast, has since 2013 been the singular entity responsible for the management, integration, stimulation, development and promotion of the pedestrian trails of Rota Vicentina, as well as the range of tourism offers associated with Rota Vicentina.

Conceived as a public institution, Rota Vicentina is truly a defining characteristic of the region, developing its usufruct through one of the most natural practices to the human condition – walking – and contributing unequivocally to the sustainability of this rural world. Rota Vicentina does this through stimulating existing activities and services, maintaining and reinforcing local traditions and culture, encouraging the creation of new businesses and promoting the destination outside the high season for a flourishing economy year round.

The beauty of the landscape, the natural, historical and cultural heritage, the numerous resources for tourists and the public nature of the trails were the fundamental criteria in the process of choosing the route, which is composed of existing paths and constitutes the Historical Way, the Fishermen’s Trail and several Circular routes. This network of routes allows for itineraries to complement each other and show the true essence of the Sw of Portugal.

In 2019, Rota Vicentina expanded its original set of offers to include a system of over 1000 km of mountain biking trails, a Touring Bike route linking Lisbon and Faro airports, and several Nature, Culture and Wellness activities.

None of this would be possible without the support of a network of public and private partners, namely municipalities and parish councils, regional and national tourism entities, the institute for conservation of nature and forests, local bodies, individuals and, above all, more than 200 associated companies, which have supported and enabled the project at various levels.

PHILOSOPHY, MISSION AND OBJECTIVES

Aware that this region is one of the last natural corners of Europe’s southern coast, businessmen, institutions and local people fear for its destruction and are determined to preserve what makes it so special.

Investing in natural and cultural values is always a smart idea, which allows small businesses to sustain throughout the year and provides people from around the world contact with the authentic reality of a region that is full of personality.

Part of Rota Vicentina’s mission is to invest in the environmental protection of this territory, in the development of a high quality, sustainable tourism project, and to offer products and services that are loyal to the local culture and identity. Parallel to these goals, the project is also focused on the protection and welfare of the local community, with whom Rota Vicentina collaborates regularly with. If there is a reason why Rota Vicentina stands out, it is because of its collaboration with over 200 companies, the majority of them local, that all share the same principles.

GOALS

Establish the Sw of Portugal as an international destination for nature tourism, generating awareness in all who visit for the environmental and cultural importance of the region

Regulate the passage of hikers through environmentally sensitive areas

Consolidate network development (companies, institutions, population)

Provide the region with public infrastructure for usufruct of nature, bringing the tourist closer to the local population

Stimulate existing offers in the middle or low season and create new business opportunities
